Nintendo Switch Online Adds Four Classic Games Including Wario Land and Dr. Mario & Puzzle League: Nintendo is expanding its classic game library once again, bringing four new retro titles to Nintendo Switch Online. The latest additions include Fortified Zone, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, The Sword of Hope 2, and Dr. Mario & Puzzle League, giving subscribers more nostalgic games to enjoy on both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.
The newly added titles span two generations of Nintendo handheld gaming, with three games originally released for the Game Boy and one coming from the Game Boy Advance era. The update continues Nintendo’s ongoing effort to preserve and bring older games to modern platforms through its subscription service.
Among the biggest additions is Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, a beloved Game Boy platformer that introduced players to a different side of Mario’s rival, Wario. Originally released in 1994, the game marked Wario’s first starring role in the series and moved away from traditional Mario gameplay by focusing on exploration, treasure hunting, and Wario’s unique abilities.
Unlike the fast-paced platforming style of classic Mario games, Wario Land introduced mechanics that allowed players to use Wario’s strength and transformations to overcome obstacles. The game became a fan favourite and eventually helped establish the long-running Wario Land franchise.
Another Game Boy title added to Nintendo Switch Online is Fortified Zone, a top-down action game originally released in 1991. Developed by Jaleco, the title combines shooting and strategy elements as players navigate enemy-filled areas while attempting to complete missions. Its addition gives subscribers another example of the diverse range of experiences available from the Game Boy library.
The third Game Boy addition, The Sword of Hope 2, brings a role-playing adventure to the service. Originally released in the early 1990s, the game features exploration, battles, and classic RPG mechanics that reflect the handheld gaming style of the era.
For subscribers with access to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, Nintendo has also added Dr. Mario & Puzzle League from the Game Boy Advance library. The collection combines two puzzle experiences: the classic tile-matching gameplay of Dr. Mario and the competitive puzzle mechanics of Puzzle League.
The Game Boy Advance title joins the growing collection of enhanced classic games available through the Expansion Pack tier, which provides access to additional retro libraries beyond the standard Nintendo Switch Online offering.
Nintendo Switch Online has gradually expanded its selection of classic games since launching, adding titles from systems including the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, and Sega Genesis. The service has become a key part of Nintendo’s strategy for making older games available to a new generation of players.
The arrival of these four titles gives subscribers more options across different genres, from platforming and action to role-playing and puzzle games. It also highlights Nintendo’s continued focus on its handheld history, with many Game Boy and Game Boy Advance classics receiving renewed attention through the Switch ecosystem.
Players can access the new additions now through the Nintendo Switch Online applications on compatible consoles. While some games are available through the standard membership, Dr. Mario & Puzzle League requires the Expansion Pack tier.
With Nintendo continuing to add classic titles, fans can expect the retro catalogue on Switch and Switch 2 to keep growing, offering a mix of familiar favourites and lesser-known games from the company’s long history.
