This is not the first time the music industry has raised alarms about AI’s growing influence. Back in April 2024, over 200 prominent artists, including Billie Eilish, Katy Perry, and Jon Bon Jovi, signed an open letter highlighting the dangers posed by AI technologies. Organized by the Artist Rights Alliance, the letter calls for a halt to the use of AI to infringe on artists’ intellectual property and diminish the value of their work.
The letter warns against practices such as deepfakes, voice cloning, and unauthorized use of musical works to train AI models. One of the major concerns raised by these artists is the potential for AI to undermine royalty payments, as well as the unauthorized use of an artist’s name, voice, or image in creating content that might mislead fans or affect an artist’s livelihood. These technologies can generate convincing replicas of an artist’s sound without their consent, resulting in digital “copies” of music that are distributed without compensation or recognition to the creators.
Dion‘s comments come at a time when she is personally navigating her own challenges. In December 2022, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with Stiff-Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological condition that causes severe muscle spasms and rigidity. The condition has forced her to scale back her performances and focus on intense physical and vocal therapy to manage her symptoms. Despite the difficulties posed by SPS, Dion made an emotional return to the stage in July 2024, performing the iconic French song “Hymne à l’Amour” during the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, standing proudly atop a platform on the Eiffel Tower.
