Gwyneth Paltrow Gets Real About Intimacy Coordinators on Set!

Gwyneth Paltrow Gets Real About Intimacy Coordinators on Set! After a five-year hiatus from acting, Gwyneth Paltrow made her return to the screen with the highly anticipated film Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie. However, despite her decades of experience in Hollywood, there was one aspect of modern filmmaking that Paltrow had never encountered before: the intimacy coordinator. The role, which has become increasingly common on set to ensure that actors are comfortable during intimate scenes, was entirely new to the veteran actress.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Paltrow admitted that she had no idea what an intimacy coordinator was before working on Marty Supreme. “There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I didn’t even know existed,” she shared with a laugh. “I told the coordinator, ‘I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, and the camera’s rolling.’” It was clear from her tone that this new era of professional, structured intimacy was a departure from the way things were done during her earlier years in Hollywood.

Despite the unfamiliarity with the role, Paltrow found that there were numerous intimate scenes in Marty Supreme that necessitated the presence of the coordinator. As she explained, “I mean, we have a lot of sex in this movie. There’s a lot — a lot.” The film’s storyline involves Paltrow’s character and her complicated relationship with Timothée Chalamet’s character, who plays a charming and enigmatic ping-pong champion. As the two engage in various passionate encounters, the need for a supportive presence to navigate the intricacies of these scenes became essential.

While Paltrow appreciated the intimacy coordinator’s role, she also revealed that, at times, she and Chalamet found themselves requesting the coordinator to give them more space during certain sequences. “We said, ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back,’” Paltrow recalled. “If someone is directing exactly where someone’s hand is going to go, I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that.” Her comments hint at the balance that must be struck between ensuring consent and safety while also allowing room for artistic freedom in portraying intimate moments on screen.

Despite her initial hesitations, Paltrow seemed to embrace the idea of simulating sex with Chalamet, making light of the significant age difference between the two. “I was like, ‘OK, great. I’m 109 years old. You’re 14,’” she joked, showcasing her easygoing attitude toward the experience. Still, she couldn’t help but admire Chalamet’s professionalism and skill. In fact, Paltrow had nothing but praise for her co-star, describing him as a modern-day icon. “He’s such a thinking man’s sex symbol,” she said with genuine admiration. “He’s very polite, well-raised… He takes his work really seriously, and he’s such a fun partner to work with.”

Chalamet, who has quickly become one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars, was a source of reassurance for Paltrow as she stepped back into acting after a long break. She expressed that his presence on set made her feel at ease, even helping her overcome some of the nervousness she had about returning to the industry. “He is such a wonderful young man,” Paltrow said during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. “He’s very polite, very talented, and just so nice to be with. I’m really having a good time with him.”

For Paltrow, working with Chalamet and experiencing the new dynamics of intimacy on set was an important part of her growth as an actress. Though she came from a different era in Hollywood, where actors were often expected to handle intimate scenes with little to no guidance or support, she acknowledged that times have changed. In many ways, Marty Supreme marked not just a new chapter in Paltrow’s career, but a reflection of how the industry is evolving to prioritize actors’ safety and well-being on set.
