The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) claims that many of the employees who were terminated were either union members or actively involved in efforts to organize the company’s workforce. According to the union, Rockstar’s decision to fire these workers constitutes “one of the most blatant acts of union-busting in the history of the games industry.”

IWGB president Alex Marshall accused the studio of trying to silence its staff rather than address their concerns. “Management is afraid of workers privately discussing exercising their rights for a fairer workplace and a collective voice,” Marshall said. He added that Rockstar was “prioritizing union-busting over the well-being of the people who make their games possible.”

However, Rockstar Games has rejected these claims, insisting that the firings were unrelated to any union activity. The company maintains that the dismissals were based purely on policy violations. “We took action against a small number of individuals who were found to be distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum, a clear violation of our company policies,” a Rockstar spokesperson said. “This was in no way related to people’s right to join a union or engage in union activities.”

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, echoed this statement, calling the dismissals “for gross misconduct, and for no other reason.” A spokesperson added, “Our culture is focused on teamwork, excellence, and kindness. We fully support Rockstar’s ambitions and approach.”

A Critical Time for Rockstar

The firings come at a particularly sensitive moment for Rockstar. The studio is deep in the final development stretch of Grand Theft Auto VI, arguably the most anticipated video game release in history. Originally expected to launch in late 2025, Rockstar has now confirmed a May 26, 2026 release date, citing the need for additional time to polish the experience.

Set in a modern-day Vice City, GTA VI promises to deliver the most expansive and detailed open world the series has ever seen. The game will feature two protagonists—one of whom, Lucia, marks the franchise’s first female lead. Fans have been clamoring for new information since the first trailer dropped in December 2023, and expectations remain sky-high.

But with such enormous anticipation comes immense pressure. Behind the glamour of the franchise lies a workforce that has long spoken out about long hours and crunch culture. Rockstar has previously faced criticism for its intense work demands during the development of Red Dead Redemption 2, prompting company leaders to promise better working conditions. For its part, the IWGB says it will not be deterred. “Despite this calculated attack on workers organizing for a collective voice, the Rockstar Union remains undeterred,” Marshall said. The union is reportedly exploring legal options to challenge the dismissals and demand accountability from the studio.

So far, Rockstar insists that GTA VI’s production remains on schedule despite the controversy. However, internal unrest could still affect morale, staffing, and the final stages of development. With a project of this scale—featuring a massive open world, cinematic storytelling, and complex online integration—stability within the studio is crucial.
