According to a survey conducted in 2020, 25% of Americans have consumed plant-based meat, and another 37% were willing to try other plant-based foods. The need for information on meat substitutes, like plant-based chicken, and the reasons behind why people should choose them over their animal-based counterparts is rising.  Researchers found that participants who consumed at least two servings of plant-based meat had a lower risk of heart disease than those who consumed the same quantity of animal meat, especially beef and pork.

Is plant-based meat healthy? 

It’s heart-healthy, Weight friendly: and beneficial for the environment . Plant-based meat is low in calories, fat, and rich in fiber. This can lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases thereby promoting heart health. The carbon footprint of plant-based meat is significantly lower as compared to animal-based meat. This can be beneficial for the environment. Plant-based meat is lower in caloric content than animal-based meat. This can prevent excessive calorie consumption which can aid in healthy weight management.

Some common cons of plant-based meat

  • High in sodium: Plant-based meat can be a source of excessive sodium content which can be harmful to people suffering from diabetes, hypertension, and other health conditions.
  • Highly processed and full of additives: Plant-based meat can be loaded with artificial texture, flavors, color, and other additives.

Compared to animal meats, plant-based meats are a healthier option. Particularly red meat is linked to a higher probability of developing chronic conditions including type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The risk of stomach and bowel cancers is also increased by processed meats like sausage, bacon, and hot dogs. Plant-based chicken has more nutritional benefits than real chicken, making it the healthier option.

However, this does depend on the quantity you eat, what the plant-based chicken is made out of, as well as how you choose to cook it. Most importantly, plant-based alternatives to meat are a compassionate dietary choice and choosing to consume them helps create positive shifts for animal welfare with every bite. 

Some meat alternatives available in stores, including vegetarian burgers and meatless “chicken nuggets,” may be made using animal products like eggs and cheese.
