Elon Musk on AI’s Future: Why He Believes Humanity Should “Enjoy the Ride”

Elon Musk on AI’s Future: Why He Believes Humanity Should “Enjoy the Ride” Artificial intelligence is advancing at an unprecedented pace, and few people have been as outspoken about its promise and dangers as Elon Musk. Once among the loudest voices warning about existential AI risks, Musk now appears to have adopted a more pragmatic—and surprisingly optimistic—outlook.

In a wide-ranging interview, he discussed why AI is unlikely to be stopped, why humans may no longer be the most intelligent beings within a decade, and why cooperation among AI companies is becoming increasingly urgent.

A Future of Abundance

Musk began by expressing optimism about the coming decade. Assuming humanity avoids catastrophic events such as a global nuclear war, he believes the world is heading toward an era of extraordinary prosperity.

“I think we’re headed for an age of amazing abundance.”

Rather than focusing on fears of automation replacing jobs, Musk envisions AI and robotics creating unprecedented wealth, productivity, and technological progress. His message is ultimately one of excitement about what lies ahead.

Will Humans Still Be in Control?

One of the interview’s most striking moments came when Musk was asked whether humans would remain in control ten years from now.

His answer was blunt:

“I think it is unlikely.”

He compared humanity’s future relationship with superintelligent AI to the relationship between humans and chimpanzees. If AI becomes vastly more intelligent than people, it becomes difficult to imagine humans retaining ultimate authority.

According to Musk, the intelligence gap between future AI systems and humans could eventually exceed the gap between humans and our closest evolutionary relatives.

From AI Doom to Acceptance

Years ago, Musk famously estimated there was a 10–20% chance that AI could ultimately wipe out humanity. Asked whether he still believed that estimate, he acknowledged that serious risks remain.

However, his perspective has evolved.

Rather than dwelling on worst-case scenarios, Musk says he now chooses to focus on the positive possibilities.

“I’ve come to my philosophical conclusion to look on the bright side.”

He argues that AI development now possesses enormous global momentum. Governments, companies, and researchers across the world are pushing the technology forward simultaneously.

Even if someone wanted to halt AI progress, Musk believes stopping it is no longer realistically possible.

“Enjoy the Ride”

Instead of trying to resist inevitable technological progress, Musk advocates embracing it while doing everything possible to reduce risks.

His philosophy can be summarized simply:

“Let’s enjoy the ride.”

He acknowledges that AI breakthroughs are arriving almost daily, making the pace of progress impossible to ignore.

Although existential risks remain, Musk believes the most likely outcome is one of widespread abundance rather than catastrophe.

Why AI Can’t Be Stopped

Ironically, Musk admitted that some of his own actions unintentionally accelerated AI development.

He helped establish OpenAI as an open-source nonprofit intended to serve as a counterbalance to Google’s dominance in AI research.

Later, researchers from OpenAI founded Anthropic, creating another major AI competitor.

Instead of slowing AI, these developments intensified competition across the industry.

Reflecting on this, Musk remarked:

“All roads lead to acceleration of AI.”

A New Model for AI Safety

Although Musk believes AI progress cannot realistically be halted, he argues that the industry should become far more coordinated on safety.

Rather than relying solely on governments, he proposed regular meetings among leading AI companies.

His idea is relatively straightforward:

  • Major AI labs should hold weekly or biweekly discussions.
  • Companies should receive limited early access to competitors’ frontier models.
  • If a company identifies a serious security concern, it should raise the issue immediately.
  • Governments would intervene only if an organization ignored significant risks.

According to Musk, competing AI companies have both the expertise and the incentive to identify dangerous capabilities before public release.

Unlike policymakers, frontier AI researchers understand the technology deeply enough to recognize emerging threats.

Urgency Is Increasing

When asked how quickly such coordination should begin, Musk’s answer was immediate.

He believes action is needed now.

With AI breakthroughs occurring multiple times each week, waiting six months could already be too slow.

The accelerating pace of research leaves little room for lengthy regulatory processes.

His Continuing Criticism of OpenAI

The interview also revisited Musk’s long-running criticism of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Musk argued that OpenAI had fundamentally departed from its founding mission.

Originally established as a nonprofit dedicated to developing open-source AI for the benefit of humanity, OpenAI has since evolved into one of the world’s most valuable for-profit AI companies with closed-source models.

For Musk, this represents a complete reversal of its original purpose.

“That’s the exact opposite of what I donated the money for.”

He also suggested that Anthropic’s founders left OpenAI because they had lost trust in Altman, describing Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei as someone deeply concerned about AI safety and the future of humanity.

Despite these personal disagreements, Musk acknowledged that collaboration remains essential.

“If we have to talk, we’ll talk.”

In his view, safeguarding the future of AI is more important than personal rivalries.

A Philosophy of Optimism

Perhaps the biggest shift in Musk’s thinking is philosophical rather than technical.

He still recognizes genuine dangers associated with artificial intelligence. However, he no longer believes humanity has the option of simply stopping progress.

Instead, the goal should be to steer AI development responsibly while maximizing its enormous benefits.

As Musk noted, even the universe itself eventually ends in what physicists describe as “heat death.” If that is ultimately the destination, then the journey—and how humanity chooses to navigate the age of artificial intelligence—is what truly matters.

In Summary

Elon Musk’s latest perspective marks a notable evolution from his earlier warnings about AI. While he continues to acknowledge existential risks, he now sees the technology’s advancement as effectively inevitable. Rather than attempting to halt progress, he advocates reducing risks through cooperation among leading AI companies, improving safety oversight, and preparing for a future in which artificial intelligence may surpass human intelligence. For Musk, the defining challenge is no longer whether AI will transform civilization, but how humanity chooses to guide that transformation toward an era of abundance rather than danger.
