Phil Collins Reveals Near-Death Battle With Alcohol Addiction: ‘People Were Coming to Say Goodbye’

Rock legend Phil Collins has opened up about one of the darkest chapters of his life, revealing that years of alcohol abuse left him fighting for survival in intensive care, with doctors and family members fearing he would not recover.

In a candid interview published over the weekend, the Genesis frontman disclosed that he came so close to death in 2023 that his loved ones were called to his bedside to prepare for the worst. Collins said his organs were shutting down, and difficult decisions about life support were being discussed while he remained unconscious.

A Life-Threatening Medical Crisis

Collins explained that he was admitted to a hospital in Switzerland to receive treatment for alcohol addiction. After being discharged in late 2023, his health deteriorated again within months, forcing doctors to readmit him.

His condition rapidly worsened, and he spent several months in intensive care, often unconscious and unaware of how serious his situation had become.

According to Collins, his longtime manager contacted family members because medical staff believed the rock icon might not survive.

“Because there were some decisions to be made about ‘Do we keep Phil on life support?’ kind of thing,” Collins said in an interview with The Times of London.

The singer recalled that his kidneys began failing and multiple organs started shutting down, leaving doctors deeply concerned.

“My kidneys were packing up, my organs were just seizing up. People were coming to say goodbye. But I don’t remember them coming, I didn’t have no idea this was going on. They were all worried that they wouldn’t see me again. It could all have gone so terribly wrong.”

A Remarkable Recovery

Despite the grim prognosis, Collins eventually recovered after spending seven months in the hospital.

Looking back on the ordeal, the 75-year-old musician described himself as fortunate to have survived.

“I was very lucky to have come out of that,” Collins said.

He also revealed that the experience permanently changed his relationship with alcohol.

“Needless to say, I haven’t had a drink since.”

The revelation marks one of the most personal interviews Collins has given in years and highlights the severe health consequences that prolonged alcohol addiction can have.

Family Support During Recovery

Following his recovery, Collins and his family celebrated the end of 2025 together by renting an entire floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London’s Knightsbridge district.

The gathering offered an opportunity for family members to reconnect after an emotionally challenging period that had nearly ended in tragedy.

The celebration reflected just how significant Collins’ recovery has been, considering only months earlier his family had feared they might lose him.

A Legendary Career

Phil Collins is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of his generation. As the drummer and later lead vocalist of Genesis, he helped define progressive and pop rock across several decades before launching an enormously successful solo career.

His catalog includes global hits such as “In the Air Tonight,” “Against All Odds,” “Another Day in Paradise,” and “You’ll Be in My Heart,” the latter earning him an Academy Award.

Over the years, Collins has also faced numerous health challenges, including spinal injuries and nerve damage that have significantly limited his ability to perform live. Those issues ultimately led to his retirement from touring following Genesis’ farewell concerts.

A New Chapter

Collins’ latest revelation offers fans a sobering glimpse into the personal struggles he endured away from the spotlight. While his health battle nearly claimed his life, the musician says he is grateful to have survived and embraced sobriety.

His story serves as a powerful reminder of both the dangers of long-term alcohol addiction and the importance of seeking treatment. For millions of fans around the world, Collins’ recovery represents a hopeful new chapter for one of rock music’s most enduring voices.
