Fastest Commercial Train on the Horizon
China’s CR450 high-speed rail is poised to break records as the world’s fastest commercial train, with a trial speed of 280 mph (450 km/h). Set to launch in 2025, this sleek, arrow-like train builds on the foundation of the CR400 Fuxing, which entered service in 2017. During recent trial runs from Tianjin to Beijing, the CR450 showcased its potential, featuring an eight-car configuration with the serial number covered by white tape.
Design and Performance Innovations
The CR450’s design is futuristic, with angular contours and a streamlined nose. It also boasts significant improvements over its predecessor: the train is 12% lighter, consumes 20% less energy, and has 20% better braking performance. These innovations extend beyond the train itself, with enhancements in the rail infrastructure, including bridges and tunnels, to support its high-speed capabilities.

China’s rail network is the busiest in the world, transporting over 10 million passengers daily. It reaches 99% of cities with populations over 200,000 and covers 96% of cities with populations exceeding 500,000. This vast network is central to China’s modern transport system and economic vitality.
Possible Routes and Future Plans
While recent test videos have sparked speculation about the CR450’s routes, the Chengdu-Chongqing Central Line is considered a likely candidate for the initial deployment. The Beijing-Shanghai route, though significant, may require upgrades to accommodate the train’s speed capabilities.

Speed Records: CR400 Fuxing and the Maglev L0
As of now, the fastest commercially operating train is the CR400 Fuxing, which is part of China’s high-speed rail network. It reaches a top speed of 217 mph (350 km/h) during regular service. This train is already in service, connecting major cities like Beijing and Shanghai.
However, Japan’s Maglev L0 Series holds the record for the fastest train in the world overall. It reached a top speed of 374 mph (603 km/h) during a test run in 2015, though it is not yet in commercial operation.
