AI Spending Concerns Deepen Tech Stock Rout as Intel, Reddit and Roblox Shares Plunge- Growing concerns over the enormous costs of artificial intelligence investment have intensified the sell-off in global technology stocks, with Intel, Reddit and Roblox among the biggest losers as investors increasingly demand evidence that massive AI spending will translate into sustainable profits.
The latest market turbulence follows a series of disappointing financial updates from major technology companies, raising questions about whether the billions of dollars being poured into AI infrastructure are delivering sufficient returns.
Intel was among the hardest-hit companies after warning that weaker demand for personal computers could weigh on its business while its investment requirements continue to rise.
The chipmaker has indicated that it plans to increase spending on artificial intelligence despite a slowdown in the computer market, which remains an important source of demand for its microprocessors.
Speaking during the company’s third-quarter earnings announcement on Thursday, Intel finance chief David Zinsner said the company did not expect to generate more cash than it spent this year. He also forecast fourth-quarter revenue below analysts’ expectations.
Zinsner warned that the weakness in the personal computer market could continue into next year.
“Looking ahead, we see the PC slowdown continuing at least through the first half of next year,” he said.
He also revealed that Intel had substantially increased investment in equipment during the third quarter, with spending expected to rise even further over the following three months.
The combination of weakening demand, rising capital expenditure and uncertain revenue prospects has added to investor concerns about the company’s financial outlook.
Amazon’s AI investment raises fresh questions
Amazon has also come under pressure after reporting that its spending had significantly exceeded the cash it generated. The company’s expenditure increased six-fold over a three-month period, reflecting the scale of its investment programme.
The e-commerce and cloud computing giant has committed approximately $220 billion in spending this year, with substantial amounts directed towards AI data centres, networking equipment and servers.
These investments are part of Amazon’s broader effort to strengthen its cloud computing infrastructure and compete in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence market.
Although Amazon shares recovered some of their overnight losses, they still ended Friday’s trading session 1.4% lower.
Reddit experienced an even sharper decline, with its shares plunging 29% after the social media platform reported weaker-than-expected daily active user figures.
The company also warned that Google’s growing use of AI-powered search features was affecting traffic referrals to its platform. The development has raised concerns about the potential impact of artificial intelligence on websites that depend heavily on search engines to attract visitors.
Online gaming platform Roblox also suffered substantial losses, with its stock falling 18% after reporting a decline in daily active users.
Investors demand returns from AI investments
The latest developments have intensified scrutiny of the technology sector, particularly as several major companies, including Microsoft, have reported earnings this week.
Analysts say investors are becoming increasingly concerned about the gap between the enormous sums being invested in artificial intelligence and the financial returns companies are currently generating.
Chris Low of investment management firm FHN Financial told Reuters that much of the market movement was being driven by reactions to major technology companies such as Amazon and Google.
He said these businesses were experiencing significant growing pains as they aggressively expanded their AI infrastructure.
The concern, according to Low, is that the developments could signal a broader slowdown across the technology sector.
‘Investors have turned ruthless’
The possibility of an artificial intelligence bubble has become a major topic of discussion among market analysts.
The central concern is that some technology companies may struggle to justify their high stock market valuations if the costs of constructing data centres, purchasing advanced chips and developing AI software ultimately exceed the revenue generated by these investments.
Kathleen Brookes, research director at trading firm XTB, said the AI investment trade had experienced considerable volatility in recent months.
“Investors have turned ruthless, punishing any signs of disappointment in [third quarter] earnings,” she said.
Brookes added that although AI-related stocks had enjoyed strong performances over recent years, shareholders were now looking for tangible financial returns.
“The AI trade has had a good run in recent years, but now investors want payback, and companies like Alphabet and Intel are in the crosshairs,” she said.
Long-term gains remain despite recent losses
Despite the latest market declines, several major technology stocks remain significantly higher than their levels a year ago.
The Nasdaq closed Friday down 2.8%, but remained up 7.8% over the previous 12 months. Amazon shares were still nearly 8% higher over the same period, while Alphabet was down 1.3%.
Brookes also pointed out that November has historically been a relatively strong month for stock markets.
However, she warned that continued weakness in AI-related shares could indicate that investor enthusiasm for the sector is beginning to fade.
If the selling pressure persists in the coming days, investors may start looking for alternative themes to drive market growth.
For now, the technology sector faces an important test: convincing shareholders that its enormous AI investments can produce meaningful commercial returns. As companies continue to expand their infrastructure and increase spending, investors appear increasingly unwilling to accept promises of future growth without stronger evidence of profitability.
