San Diego, California: Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that Academy Award-nominated actor Ryan Gosling will portray Ghost Rider in a new Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, bringing one of Marvel’s most iconic supernatural anti-heroes into the franchise’s expanding lineup. The announcement was made during a surprise presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, where Gosling joined Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige on stage to a standing ovation from fans.

The standalone Ghost Rider film is scheduled for release in 2028 and marks the character’s first appearance in the MCU. It will also be the third live-action film centered on the fiery motorcycle-riding vigilante, following the 2007 Ghost Rider and its 2011 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, both starring Nicolas Cage.

A Long-Awaited Marvel Debut

Before unveiling the project, Kevin Feige teased the audience by noting that one of the most common questions he receives is when Ryan Gosling would finally join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Moments later, the convention hall went dark, and when the lights returned, Gosling appeared on stage to thunderous applause.

Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, the actor expressed his excitement, saying, “Wow, is this really happening?” He added that Ghost Rider is a character he has wanted to portray “for a very long time.”

Gosling’s casting follows months of speculation after he revealed earlier this year on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast that he had been in discussions with Marvel Studios about a potential role.

Bringing Johnny Blaze Back to the Big Screen

The upcoming film will focus on Johnny Blaze, the motorcycle stunt performer who becomes Ghost Rider after making a deal with the demon Mephisto to save his surrogate father. As part of the bargain, Blaze becomes bonded with the Spirit of Vengeance, Zarathos, granting him supernatural powers, including his signature flaming skull, hellfire abilities, and mystical chain weapon.

Ghost Rider has long been one of Marvel Comics’ most recognizable supernatural characters, blending horror, action, and fantasy in stories centered on justice, redemption, and vengeance.

Marvel has yet to reveal plot details or confirm how the character will be integrated into the wider MCU, but fans have long speculated that Ghost Rider could play a significant role in Marvel’s expanding supernatural corner alongside characters such as Blade, Moon Knight, and Werewolf by Night.

Shawn Levy to Direct

The film will be directed by Shawn Levy, who previously helmed the blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. Gosling described Levy as “the only” filmmaker he wanted directing the project.

The pair are already collaborating on the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, set for release next year. Levy revealed during the Comic-Con panel that conversations about Ghost Rider began while they were working together.

“We spent a lot of our downtime daydreaming about Ghost Rider and throwing around ideas,” Levy told the audience. “As Ryan started talking about his vision for this character, we started riffing, and I finally said, ‘Bro, let’s ride.'”

The director closed the presentation by promising fans they would reunite in theaters in 2028.

Fans Welcome a Fresh Take

The announcement immediately became one of the biggest highlights of this year’s Comic-Con, with social media buzzing over Gosling’s casting. Many fans have long viewed the actor as an ideal choice for Johnny Blaze, praising his ability to balance emotional depth with action-driven performances.

While Nicolas Cage’s portrayal introduced Ghost Rider to movie audiences nearly two decades ago, Marvel Studios now has the opportunity to reinvent the character within the interconnected MCU. The studio has not confirmed whether this version will acknowledge previous films or serve as a complete reboot.

As Marvel continues expanding into darker and more supernatural storytelling, Gosling’s arrival signals a major addition to the franchise.
