Trump Says Iran Will Face Military Punishment for Future Houthi Attacks: U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday warned that Iran would be held directly responsible for any future attacks carried out by Yemen’s Houthi militants, following an assault on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea that has heightened tensions across the region.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused the Houthis of acting as a proxy for Tehran and vowed severe consequences for both the militant group and Iran if such attacks continue.
“The Houthis are a Surrogate and/or Proxy of Iran, and major military punishment will be inflicted upon Iran and, of course, the Houthis, themselves,” Trump wrote.
The warning came after Houthi fighters reportedly targeted two Saudi tankers transiting the Red Sea, one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes. The incident has renewed concerns over the security of commercial shipping through the strategic waterway, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden via the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The Houthis, an Iran-aligned armed group that controls large parts of northern Yemen, have carried out repeated missile and drone attacks on commercial vessels and military ships operating in the Red Sea since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict. The group says its operations are aimed at pressuring Israel and its allies, while the United States and several Western nations accuse Iran of providing the Houthis with military and logistical support.
Iran has consistently denied directing Houthi attacks, maintaining that the group acts independently despite longstanding political and military ties between the two.
Trump’s latest remarks signal a tougher U.S. stance by explicitly linking future Houthi operations to Tehran. His statement suggests that any additional attacks on shipping or regional assets could trigger military action not only against the Houthis but also against Iran itself.
The Red Sea remains one of the world’s most important maritime corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil exports and international trade. Disruptions in the region have prompted shipping companies to reroute vessels around southern Africa, increasing transportation costs and delivery times.
Saudi Arabia, which has spent years fighting the Houthis in Yemen, has repeatedly condemned attacks on its energy infrastructure and commercial shipping. The Kingdom has also sought to strengthen regional security partnerships to protect critical maritime routes.
Trump did not provide details on what form the threatened military response would take or specify whether any future action would involve U.S. forces alone or in coordination with regional allies.
